'What's You Left Behind ' by Emma O'Hara
This piece depicts a derelict house in rural Ireland, dimly lit from within—a symbol of absence, memory, and resilience. It began with my personal longing for homeownership, for a place to call my own—something becoming more and more out of reach for people in Ireland.
As I spent more time working on this piece, It began to speak not only to my own experience, but to the broader devastation of displacement, homelessness, and even the long lasting impact of conflict. I wanted to reflect some of the heartache of not having a place to call home—or of having a home taken away and left to ruin.
The house becomes a vessel for memory—for the soul of what once was: lives lived, stories shared, and futures cut short. Yet amid the ruin, a light remains—a quiet insistence that even in loss, there is still hope, still presence, and an urgent need to be seen. It asks the viewer not to look away.
