Artwork Statement:

The piece on display is a replication of a British Mandate stamp from the era of British occupation in Palestine. In the context of the ongoing genocide unfolding before our eyes perpetrated by the Israeli regime. It felt vital to explore and expose the historical roots of this oppression. Britain’s role in shaping the fate of Palestine cannot be ignored. The Balfour Declaration was not merely a policy statement. It was a turning point that set in motion over a century of dispossession, violence, and suffering for the Palestinian people.

During my research for this piece, I was deeply disturbed by the atrocities committed by British forces in the village of al-Bassa. In a horrific episode, male villagers were rounded up by the Royal Ulster Rifles, forced onto buses, deliberately driven over a landmine and murdered in cold blood. A British policeman captured the gruesome aftermath in photographs, showing wives, mothers, and daughters grieving over the dismembered remains of their loved ones.

These crimes are not isolated incidents; they are part of a long and shameful history of British complicity in the oppression and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians. For more than a century, successive British governments have facilitated, enabled, or turned a blind eye to the systematic violence inflicted upon Palestine.

It is time for figures like Keir Starmer and his cabinet to be held accountable. not only for their silence, but for their active role in upholding policies that support apartheid and occupation. Justice demands more than condemnation; it demands responsibility.
From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.
